Just a few minutes walk from Bond Street tube station, Oxford Street and with Selfridges just around the corner, Cocochan is in the heart of Marylebone’s best shopping. Located on busy James Street alongside some of Marylebone’s most popular eateries, this ‘pan-asian restaurant and bar’ offers an eclectic mix of dishes from across Asia.
The interior is modern with touches of purple throughout, providing a relaxed understated luxury to the restaurant. We were seated towards the back of the restaurant in a large room that opens up to feel more spacious, with the upstairs bar nearby. There is also a downstairs bar serving a range of cocktails, available for either private events or a quiet drink. The front of the restaurant opens out on to James Street, with outside tables and heaters perfect for a Summer’s evening. Being located in the thick of Marylebone’s shopping district, the busy streets around James Street are frequented by visitors from all of the world – Cocochan therefore sees a mix of both Londoners and tourists, attracting both families and couples.
The way the food is presented in Cocochan means it is a great place for a quality but relaxed meal that you can share with your company – all of our food was delivered in its own bowl or dish and put in the middle of the table to share between us.
To start, I began in Japan with the Soft Shell Crab Tempura of which I had heard good things – this was a fantastic dish, complemented further by the Ponzu sauce it was served with. My company for the evening chose a Japanese twist on the traditional Ecuadorian/Peruvian dish of Ceviche – this version, consisting of prawns, sea bass and baby squid was a good result thanks to the chilli, soya and Yozu sauce from the Japanese citrus fruit. So far, so good.
For my main course, I decided to move across Asia to Thailand for a Chicken Thai Green Curry with sticky Jasmin rice. The curry came in a big bowl and I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the dish – there was a plenty of chicken and the flavours were great. Having visited Thailand not too long ago and becoming well acquainted with the Thai Green Curry, this dish was up to the standards of many I had whilst in Thailand and it was hot enough to compete too. Across the table, my company had stuck with the Japanese theme, choosing the Seared Sesame Tuna for a main course. This wasn’t a particularly large dish, but the quality was great. The tuna was cooked almost perfectly and it was not overpowered by the zest of the Seaweed and Daikon salad that it is served with – the combination is a winning dish. This was our joint favourite dish for the evening.
The wine menu complemented the food selection well, bottles priced from £20 upwards. We ordered a selection of glasses, the favourite being the Pinot Grigio Rose IGT Vento Bella Modella. This wine had a crisp strawberry aroma that went well with both the food and the warm spring evening.
The smaller dishes and starters at Cocochan will cost anywhere from £5-£10, whilst most main dishes are around the £15 mark. The overall consensus is that we were really pleased with this meal – if you happen to be spending the day taking in the best Marylebone, Oxford Street or Bond Street has to offer, we’re more than happy to recommend Cocochan as the place to finish off the day with a glass of wine and some really tasty food.
